Services

From the routine gynecologic checkups to family planning, Martinez Obstetrics + Gynecology wants to work as partners in your health care. We offer many services that promote wellness and optimal care for women.

Colposcopy

A colposcopy is a simple procedure that allows your doctor to examine the cervix if the results of a pap smear come back as abnormal.

This procedure may also include a biopsy, in which the doctor will collect a small sample of tissue to be examined for cancerous cells.

With both the colposcopy and the cervical biopsy, you should be able to go back to work or school right away, though care should be taken for the next 48 hours.

Loop Electrical Excision Procedure (LEEP)

LEEP stands for Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure and is done to prevent cervical cancer. A small electrical wire loop is used to remove abnormal cells from the cervix. Patients can return home right away and medication will be prescribed to stop any bleeding.

Endometrial Biopsy

An endometrial biopsy is the removal of a small piece of tissue from the lining of the uterus and may be performed if a Pap test shows that there are “precancerous” cells in the uterus.

This test can be done in the doctor’s office and an over-the-counter pain reliever may be recommended 30 minutes before the visit. Light spotting and cramping are common and the doctor may recommend over the counter pain medications.

IUD Insertion

IUDs are inserted through your cervix into the uterus to protect against pregnancy. The entire procedure takes 5 to 15 minutes.

Cramps and spotting are common after the IUD is inserted. Mild cramps and bleeding can last from 3 to 6 months.

Over-the-counter pain relievers, like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, may be recommended to ease any discomfort along with a heating pad or hot water bottle.

Nexplanon

Nexplanon is a small rod (about the size of a matchstick) implanted under the skin of a woman's upper arm to provide birth control.

The implant delivers progestin into the body, which is a hormone that prevents ovaries from releasing eggs. Progestin also thickens the mucus inside the body to prevent sperm from reaching eggs and can prevent pregnancy for up to four years.

Tubal ligation

Tubal ligation is a medical sterilization procedure for women who don't want a future pregnancy.

The procedure blocks the fallopian tubes to permanently prevent pregnancy. This eliminates the need for birth control but does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

If gas was used during tubal ligation, it will be removed when the procedure is complete. It is possible to go home several hours after an interval tubal ligation.

Ovarian cystectomy

An ovarian cystectomy is a surgery to remove a cyst from the ovary. Ovarian cysts are common, and painless and harmless most of the time. Symptoms include pressure, bloating, swelling, or pain in the lower abdomen on the side of the cyst.

Most cysts need no treatment. If a cyst is large or causes problems then it may need surgery if it does not go away on its own. Medicine for pain or birth control pills may be prescribed. The hormones in the pills help prevent new cysts from forming.
